Wait…instant ramen can be made healthy?

Yes, it can and it will barely cost you anything! In fact, there are a ton of ways you can make ramen healthy for your family and also something they will want to eat. I mean that is the trick with kids right. Make them food they want to eat but also have it be healthy at the same time. 

Instant ramen is a great meal to have as a quick meal during the workweek. Especially for those nights, you are getting home late or your kids are having full-blown hangry tantrums. I hate having to deal with hangry toddlers and so I love having an easy back-up meal that will take me less than 10 minutes to make.

So, what do you need to make instant ramen into a healthy meal?

The answer is pretty simple…frozen vegetables. That is it. Adding frozen veggies to instant ramen is great because the broth and noodles will hide the vegetable flavor, which means kids are more likely to eat them.

The frozen vegetables that I like to use are frozen peas/carrots and frozen corn. But you can choose whichever frozen veggies you like best. 

Here is a list of all the amazing frozen veggies you can add to your instant ramen:
  • Baby Cob Corn
  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Corn
  • Green Beans
  • Peas
  • Snap Peas
  • Water Chestnuts

There are two reasons I recommend frozen vegetables over fresh. The first is the cost. I usually can get two bags of the store brand frozen vegetables for $3.00. 

The second reason is that I don’t have to do any food preparation. I just add them to the water and let the heat do the rest. That’s it.

Now I am not saying you don’t have to use fresh vegetables. If that is what you prefer, then do you and make your delicious meal.

It cost me less than $5.00 and I can make it four times. Isn’t that awesome! Not only is it an inexpensive meal, but I love that I can make multiple meals from it. Here is the cost breakdown:

  • 4 Instant Ramen = $1.00
  • 2 frozen vegetables of my choice = $3.00
Add grilled cheese on the side to make it even more kid-friendly.

So I know adding a grilled cheese on the side makes it less healthy, but both my kids love dipping them into their sandwich. I mean I do to if I am being honest. The best part of grilled cheese is that there are a ton of options if you need to switch things up. 

Try using different cheeses for a different flavor experience. We love to switch out our cheddar cheese with mozzarella or provolone. You can also cook one side of the grilled cheese with shredded parmesan, which is delicious.

Healthy Instant Ramen Recipe


  • Instant Ramen packet
  • 2 ½ cups of water
  • 1-2 cups frozen peas and carrots
  • 1-2 cups frozen corn


Step 1: Add frozen vegetables and water in a pot.

Step 2: Boil water as directed on the instant ramen packet.

Step 3: Add frozen vegetables and ramen to boiling water.

Step 4: Follow cook time directions for noodles.

Step 5: Add the flavor packet and stir.

Step 6: Enjoy!

And there you have. That is all it takes to have a healthy and tasty meal for your family. And it will take you less than 10 minutes to make. 

I have made this recipe a couple of times and it is becoming a life-saver for dealing with my hangry little boys. My oldest is going through the “I don’t like vegetables stage”, but with this meal, he eats everything without complaint (thank goodness for that).

Bonus Tip: If you want to make this meal even healthier, there are two options. 

  1. Reduce the amount of flavor packet you add to the boiling water (which is considered blasphemy if you ask my husband).


  1. Replace the water with the low-sodium broth of your choice. You still get the flavor, but without all the extra salt.

Well, you’re in luck! One of the best parts about instant ramen is that there is a ton of different foods you can add to it. 

Check out this list of additional ingredients for more inspirations:

  1. Meat. Choose the meat of your choice: chicken, pork, or beef. The best part with meat is that you can add it any way you want (ground, sliced, or shredded). This is great if you have leftovers from a previous meal.
  2. Sausage of choice (kielbasa, brats, andouille, etc.)
  3. Hotdogs
  4. Bacon
  5. Tofu
  6. Eggs (soft-boiled or whisk an egg before dropping it into the boiling broth)
  7. Coconut Milk (makes for a creamier broth)
  8. Sesame Seeds
  9. Peanut Butter (adds flavor to the broth)
  10. Vegetables:
    • Bean Sprouts
    • Bok Choy
    • Cabbage
    • Chard
    • Garlic
    • Ginger
    • Scallions
    • Spinach
    • Zucchini
